Building a website used to be straightforward: design for humans, optimize for search engines, ship it. Now we have a third audience that's rapidly becoming just as important: AI agents.
Last week, while Claude and I were debugging our serverless deployment issues, something fascinating emerged. Every design decision we made had to satisfy two completely different types of users—humans who browse visually and AI agents that consume data programmatically.
This dual-audience problem is reshaping how we think about web architecture, UX design, and content strategy. Here's what I've learned from building for both.
The Fundamental Tension
Humans and AI agents want completely different things from your website:

The tension isn't just philosophical—it's architectural. Every technical decision now requires asking: "How does this serve both audiences?"
Where Traditional UX Patterns Break Down
Take something as simple as navigation. For humans, you might use:

The solution isn't to abandon good UX. It's to **layer machine-readable structure underneath**:

## Content Strategy: The Information Architecture Challenge
Content presents an even bigger challenge. Consider this blog post you're reading right now.
**For humans**, I need to:
- Hook attention with a compelling opening
- Use varied sentence lengths and paragraph breaks
- Include contextual asides and personality
- Build narrative tension and resolution
- Guide attention with typography and white space
**For AI agents**, I need to:
- Provide structured metadata about topics and complexity
- Offer content in machine-readable formats
- Include explicit relationships to related content
- Supply semantic markup for key concepts
- Enable efficient content extraction
Here's how I solve this dual requirement:
